Paddling is a broad term that encompasses stand up paddling, prone paddling and outrigger canoe paddling. At this year’s 2014 SDOCC La Jolla Shores Invitational all types of paddlers came together for a great race and community event in San Diego, CA. It was the beginning of November but with clear skies, no wind, 80 degree weather and bathing suits all over it appeared to be the middle of summer. This event was hosted by the San Diego Outrigger Canoe Club and involved three races with different classes of paddlers.
Hot Days & Small Waves: The conditions were close to ideal that day with a little swell in the water and perfect weather. We had a great presence as six of our team members were primed for each race. The first event was a short 4 mile course that extended north of the shores and looped back down south to the finish line right outside the surf zone. All races had water starts which on occasion aren’t the most honest in regards to starting equally. We brought along our custom 12’6 carbon fiber race board as well as our standard 12’6 Isle Race Boards which preformed great with the deep hull entry helping the board cut through the mild chop that day.
Friendly Competition: Our Isle race team consisted of a group of good friends that have been paddling together for years and wanted bragging rights amongst one another. Best friends Jessie and Marc went tit for tat in the 4 mile race trying to settle their ongoing rivalry between one another. In the end, Marc was victorious beating Jessie by a couple seconds and taking 1st place overall in the 12’6 Stand Up category. Team rider Jeremy Hockey did an amazing job in the 6.5 mile course and credited his fast time to the light body of the custom carbon race board.
Brining the Community Together: This particular event had an emphasis on brining the community and different paddlers together for a fun and memorable day of paddling. The event had a tasty barbeque as well as a raffle with donations from all the sponsors including ourselves. One lucky person went home with a 10’10 Isle Glider All Water paddle board.
