Your Top 5 Hard Paddle Board Questions

Posted on September 14, 2021 by Reed Naliboff

First, let’s identify what makes a hard paddle board indeed a “hard paddle board”. There are two basic styles of paddle boards, those that are inflatable (come in a smaller box, can store anywhere, and inflate at paddle destination) and those that are more rigid, always hold their shape, and typically have better performance – also known as a hard paddle board.

Note: hard paddle boards are also referred to as epoxy, non-inflatable, traditional, or fiberglass paddle boards.

WHY WOULD I WANT A HARD PADDLE BOARD VS AN INFLATABLE PADDLE BOARD?

Both have their benefits! However, we always ask that you refer to these 5 key things when choosing which board you’d like to consider.

1. Portability

2. Store Space

3. Durability

4. Performance

5. Cost

HOW CAN I TRANSPORT THE HARD PADDLE BOARD?

All of our hard paddle boards come with easy-to-carry handles, making handheld carrying the board very easy (they are sometimes heavy and large size, so big careful!). For longer transport, you will need a large car, truck, or car racks. From there, the board is incredibly easy to tie down to car racks for the duration of any trip. Check out our blog on how to transport your paddle board.

WHAT IS IT MADE OUT OF?

The foundation of our selection of hard boards varies:

  1. Cruiser = Epoxy core with a soft outer skin and full deck traction pad.
  2. Versa = Epoxy model with soft matte traction pad section.
  3. Outpost = Epoxy core with our most durable outer shell and reinforced rails.
  4. Voyager = Epoxy core with wooden finish (point nose)
  5. Glider = Epoxy core with wooden finish (circular nose)
  6. Classic = Epoxy model with diamond grove traction pad

IS THERE ANY MAINTENANCE THAT IS NEEDED?

The elements can cause havoc on any item over an extended period of time – especially saltwater and sunlight. Your boards are, of course, made to be enjoyed in the outdoors so we offer some guidelines for it when not in use.

  1. Do not leave in the sun for an extended period of time.
  2. Avoid other ways of heat damage, hot rooms, board bags for prolonged periods etc..
  3. Small cracks and dings: Overtime these may cause water damage in the internal foam epoxy core. Be sure to get any non-water tight cracks or dings fixed right away.
  4. When using in salt or fresh water, be sure to rinse your board after each use. This will increase the lifespan of your ISLE paddle board!

WHAT IS THE BEST BEGINNER HARD BOARD?

The best all-around or beginner hard boards are The Cruiser or The Versa. Each has a very user-friendly shape, cushion for a comfortable ride, and even does well in some surf! Equipped with bungees, carry handles and traction pads, these hard boards are also the best value price point for beginners.
