How To SUP: 6 Basic Steps

  1. Place your beginner SUP into the water so your center fin is free from hitting the bottom. You may need to walk your board further into the water to free your center fin.
  2. Get on your stand up paddle board in a kneeling position.
  3. While you’re on your knees, take a few paddle strokes on each side of your SUP.
  4. Once you’re comfortable with paddling on your knees, get some momentum and slowly stand up with one foot at a time on your SUP. Make sure you plant your feet shoulder-width apart toward the middle of your board.
  5. If you’re having trouble keeping your balance, it's ok to lower back down to your knees. Keep trying until you feel balanced and comfortable.
  6. Once you feel comfortable standing up on your SUP, keep a slight bend in your knees and keep your core centered over your board.

Quick tip: The easiest way to stay balanced while learning how to stand up on a paddle board is to keep your momentum by paddling. Think of it like riding a bike -- staying balanced when riding a bike is only tough when you’re not moving.
